ISCTRC’s Biennial Conference
The 29th International Scientific Council
for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control
(ISCTRC) Biennial Conference was held in
Luanda, Angola in October 2007. FIND and
WHO jointly hosted a symposium entitled
Partnering to develop diagnostic tests for human
African trypanosomiasis. A major highlight of the
symposium was a presentation by FIND and her
partners from Obihiro (Japan) and Murdoch
(Australia) universities on the feasibility of using
the LAMP (loop-mediated isothermal amplification)
technology to diagnose sleeping sickness in
remote areas of high-endemic countries.
The turn out at the conference was excellent
and FIND’s presentations were very well
received.
Some of the ISCTRC conference recommendations
that impact on FIND’s activities
include:
■ That PATTEC should be established
in all endemic countries, to serve as entry points
for the organization of integrated
Tsetse & Trypanosomiasis (T&T) control
programmes
■ That the existing networks be
strengthened through more active
participation and improved dissemination
of technical and scientific knowledge
and through increased sharing of relevant
datasets
■ That there is a need for developing
pro-poor public policies to create an
enabling environment for the
participation of rural communities in
T&T interventions and private sector
involvement
