Dr. Solomon Haile Mariam recently joined the HAT Diagnostics Programme at FIND as an Advocacy Officer. He has been seconded to the Pan-African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC) office of the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Dr. Mariam brings with him a wealth of experience in African trypanosomiasis research and control, having held key positions in the field at national and international levels.
Before joining FIND, Solomon was a senior staff member of the AUC, where he led and coordinated various programmes, including the Pan African Rinderpest Eradication Campaign (PARC) and the Farming in Tsetse Controlled Areas (FITCA) project. He was also Secretary to the International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control (ISCTRC) and managed the Secretariat at the AU-IBAR office in Nairobi for 10 years. Solomon contributed significantly in the establishment and strengthening of the Programme Against African Trypanosomiasis (PAAT) as a member of the Joint Secretariat with FAO, WHO, IAEA and AU/IBAR. In 2000, while at the AU/IBAR, he coordinated the preparation of the AU-PATTEC strategic plan which was presented to and approved by the African Heads of States.
A veterinarian by profession, Solomon has worked in various capacities with the Ethiopian Government, including 9 years as Director of Veterinary Services and 2 years as Head of the National Artificial Insemination Center.
