Dr. Magdalena Radwanska obtained a PhD in Molecular Parasitology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, where she studied various host/trypanosome immune interactions and anti-parasite vaccination strategies. Prior to her PhD, she earned her Master’s degree in Biology from Warsaw University, Poland.
Dr. Radwanska conducted a post-doctoral research project at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. Among other research achievements, she designed and developed a differential diagnostic PCR, which permitted to differentiate between two forms of Human African Trypanosomiais (HAT). In addition, together with the Boston-based company BioProbes, she developed a series of fluorescent PNA probes with diagnostic potential for trypanosomiasis, which she validated through field work in Malawi.
Subsequently, Dr. Radwanska pursued an international research career in South Africa and the USA. At the University of Cape Town, her work included a study on Leishmania- associated immunopathology and the development of an antibody-based HIV/AIDS diagnostic test, in collaboration with the Danish biotech company Virogates. At Tufts University, Massachusetts, she generated an iRNA approach to actively block the growth and proliferation of Schistosoma mansoni.
Following this research experience, Dr. Radwanska was invited to return to Belgium to take up a position at the Laboratory of Parasitology of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Here she led a project on vaccine development involving membrane components of Trypanosoma cruzi. This project was executed in collaboration with SmithKline, Rixensart, Belgium. In addition, she became a guest lecturer on Parasitology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, and got actively involved at this institute in research collaboration on fundamental B-cell biology of experimental trypanosomiasis.
Dr. Radwanska joined FIND in September 2007 as Scientific Officer for the HAT Diagnostics Programme.
