Senior Technology Officer
Dr. Gerd Michel

Dr. Gerd Michel was
appointed full-time Senior Technology Officer
at FIND on 1 July 2006. He joined the organization as a full time staff
member after leaving industry. In this new position, Gerd will be
responsible for bringing technical and industry
skills and experience to bear on the development of
diagnostic tests across the entire FIND disease portfolio.
Dr. Gerd Michel
received his PhD in clinical biochemistry from the
University of Heidelberg, Germany, where he headed
research in cellular pharmacology at the department
of internal medicine for seven years. He also earned
a master degree in sports medicine from the same
university.
After two years in
the private laboratory sector he joined Abbott
Laboratories as a founding member of the company’s
newly established European R&D operations in 1987.
Among various management positions held at Abbott’s
R&D and business development units, he finally
served as Medical and Scientific Director, Europe,
Africa and Middle East.
He was also in charge
of Abbott's European biotechnology venture program
and product development and has successfully
directed the development and launch of a number of
diagnostic assays for different laboratory systems,
primarily in the fields of infectious diseases,
immunology and cardiology. Beyond these functions,
he directed numerous clinical studies and is well
connected within the international healthcare and
biotechnology sector.
During his scientific
fellowships Dr. Michel conducted research in
Scandinavia, the USA and South East Asia; beyond
these activities he became a member of the German
National Blood Advisory Committee (Arbeitskreis Blut)
of the Ministry of Health, where he served for four
years.
He won several
international scientific awards and has more than
150 peer-reviewed publications to his credit.
