Consultant, TB Laboratory Support Dr. Balasangameshwara Vollepore

Dr. Balasangameshwara H. Vollepore (“Bala”) joined FIND in October 2007 as a Consultant for TB Laboratory Support. Prior to joining FIND, he served as Head of Healthcare Academics at the Manipal Universal Learning division of Manipal University. Before this, he was on the faculty of National Tuberculosis Institute (NTI) and held the post of Chief Medical Officer and Head Bacteriology Section. He earned MD qualification in Medical Microbiology from Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Madras University, and MBBS degrees from Bangalore Medical College.

Dr. Vollepore made several important contributions to India’s tuberculosis control programme, gaining extensive experience in the operational aspects of India’s TB control program during his tenure as a faculty member of the National Tuberculosis Institute (NTI) from 1981 to 2006. He made significant contributions to the external quality assessment of smear microscopy, drug resistance surveillance and DOTS plus programmes in India. His wide-ranging experience includes training of laboratory personnel and streamlining TB laboratory services at the NTI and in several state level reference laboratories in India.
