About FIND > FIND Team > Heidi Albert
Dr. Heidi Albert received a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) degree from the University of Bath, England, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacy and Pharmacology from the same institution. She worked as a post-doctoral scientist in the USA studying use of rapid microbial detection for sterilization assurance in the healthcare field. Dr. Albert has 10 years of experience in TB diagnostics development. She worked for Biotec Laboratories, first in Johannesburg and later in Cape Town, South Africa, based at the South African Institute for Medical Research Laboratories (now National Health Laboratory Service). There she headed the R & D team responsible for the development of commercial rapid phage-based assays for diagnosis and drug susceptibility testing. She recently completed a Masters of Public Health, specializing in Health Economics, at the University of Cape Town. Dr. Albert joined FIND in March 2007 to oversee demonstration projects for rapid screening for multidrug-resistant TB in South Africa, undertaken in collaboration with the South Africa Medical Research Council, the National Health Laboratory Service, and the national and provincial departments of health. Data from these studies will be submitted to WHO’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Tuberculosis (STAG-TB) in June 2008 to support policy recommendations for use of line probe assays for MDR screening. In April 2008 she moved to FIND-Uganda to become Head of FIND’s Diagnostics Research Laboratory based at the National TB Reference Laboratory in Kampala. FIND’s laboratory will undertake studies aimed at improving and simplifying specimen processing, as well as clinical studies of new technologies. FIND signed an MOU with the Uganda Ministry of Health in 2007, and will work closely with them on strengthening the country’s laboratory system, and facilitating introduction of new technologies.
